Online MS
The Online MS degree in Family Therapy operates on a cohort model whereby all participants complete 60-credit hours of part time study over a three year period. Clinical courses are taught during the second summer at UMass Dartmouth, during which all participants must be present for an intensive two-week session held in late June and early July (low cost student housing accommodations at UMass Dartmouth are provided to participants). The remaining courses are delivered in a web-based on-line format following a semester calendar using both synchronous and asynchronous formats. Participants must follow the program of study exactly. The program requires a 900 to 1200 hour internship completed over the course of three semesters beginning in the third summer.
Based on the experiences of former students, to fulfill the minimum of 500 direct clinical contact hours, interns need to complete approximately 20 hours per week at their internship site. It consists of supervised field experiences in approved agencies offering family therapy. While engaged in the field work placement, students attend on-line seminars and receive group supervision through synchronous web conferencing. In doing so, students' experiences are examined in relation to current issues of concern in the field of family therapy. Students are also supervised by internship site supervisors and participate in conference calls. Students are expected to provide audio/video tapes of counseling sessions. The COAMFTE does not accredit online family therapy programs; consequently, the Family Therapy Online Program is not accredited. The online program is designed for students who cannot readily access the Boston campus. The admissions committee will assess this criterion. Those applicants who can reach the campus are encouraged to apply to the on campus program.
